Designed by Ray Wilkes and first introduced in 1976, this eye-catching modular collection made a lasting impression with bold, rounded-edge cushions. Steel brackets joining the seat and back allow for independent flex that provides a surprising level of individual comfort.

Ray Wilkes Ray Wilkes pioneered the technology of foam injection in 1974 when he designed the Modular Sofa Group—nicknamed the “Chiclet” for its resemblance to the colorful gum. Equal parts flexible and festive, Herman Miller has just reissued the Chiclet, introducing Wilkes' designs to a new generation.

A Classic Reborn

Forms That Float

While working at Herman Miller in the 1970s, designer Ray Wilkes experimented with the (then) new technique of injecting foam into custom-made molds. The result was uniquely shaped, rounded cushions that form Wilkes Modular Seating.

45 Years Young

Recently, design enthusiasts and vintage collectors have developed a fondness for Wilkes’ fondly dubbed “Chiclet” sofa. This renewed interest inspired Herman Miller to reissue the sofa in 2021.
